To visit Florence, walk around the streets of the historical center, interesting and characteristic corners will accompany your stroll from Hotel Palazzo Vecchio. Walk down Via Guelfa then Via degli Alfani, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure is at no. 78. Founded at the end of the 16th century, to manufacture furniture with stone, today it is a museum which houses beautiful inlaid stone and multi-colored marble works. The hotel is also in the immediate vicinity of the Chiesa San Lorenzo, with its Cappelle Medicee, mausoleum for the Medici family and the Sagrestia (sacristies). The Sagrestia Nuova was designed by Michelangelo and here the artist sculpted the immensely charming allegorical sculptures of Day and Night and Dawn and Dusk. |
From here it is worth crossing the lively Mercato di San Lorenzo to reach the nineteenth century Mercato Centrale. Covered and with windows it is a show of colors and scents. Hotel Palazzo Vecchio is two hundred meters from Santa Maria Novella, the renowned church in various colors of marble, with fifteenth century facade by Leon Battista Alberti. From here you can reach Santa Maria del Fiore, the Duomo of Florence with its famous dome by Brunelleschi, milestone of the Italian Renaissance. By taking Via Calzaiuoli (one of the main shopping streets along with Via Tornabuoni and Via della Vigna Nuova) you will arrive to Piazza della Signoria with its fourteenth century Palazzo Priori, called Palazzo Vecchio where our hotel got its name. In the evening you can choose one of the numerous restaurants and trattorias in the vicinity of the hotel, where you can sample dishes of Florentine and Tuscan cuisine. From ribollita to pappa al pomodoro or crostini all to taste along with a glass of some good Chianti. |
