The Dome: The name of the Dome is Saint Mary of Flower, with clear reference to the "lily", the symbol of the city. "Dome" is a word coming from the Latin "domus", that is "house". It is the fourth church of the world (after S. Peter's in Rome, S. Paul's in London and the Dome of Milan).
The Old Bridge: Florence Old Bridge is well known all over the world for its shops built down its. It is the most ancient bridge of the city. It was built in wood during the Roman age and was almost destroyed for four times by the alluviums of the Arno River and some fires, until its reconstruction in masonry, with a much solid architecture.
Piazza della Signoria: During XII century Florence was split in two factions, Guelfis and Ghibellinis, who sourly fought all over the city. After alternate vicissitudes Guelfis gained the upper hand and Ghibellinis were hunted from Florence and on the ruins of their powerful buildings, razed to the ground, a square was built, "Piazza della Signoria" which was spread with salt "to stop even the grass to grown there".
Pitti Palace: The huge Pitti Palace, whose magnificence is due to the ambition of the trader Pitti, overtops Pitti Square. According to the history, Pitti's ambitious was immense; he was greed to overcome the noblest Florentine families. That's why he supported the construction of a building unique for its magnitude and which had to be able to enclose the most prestigious city palaces.
The Basilica of S.Croce: Even if the origins of the first Franciscan oratory remain vague, the construction of Santa Croce basilica is well documented. It officially started on 3 May 1294, when the architect Arnolfo di Cambio placed the first stone realizing one of the most important Italian gothic masterpieces.
