A warm welcome awaits you at the five-star Hotel Savoy in the heart of Florence. Located on the historic Piazza della Repubblica, close the landmark Duomo, and just steps away from the main fashion houses, museums and galleries.
The hotel's elegant décor offers a chance to experience the best that Florence has to offer with the highest standards of accommodation, cuisine and personalised service synonymous with the Rocco Forte Hotels brand. |
We re-opened the Hotel Savoy in May 2000 after a complete refurbishment transformed it into the finest luxury hotel in Florence. The design by Sir Rocco Forte's sister, Olga Polizzi, is stylish and reflects the charm and character of the location in a contemporary way.
The hotel's central position and its close proximity to the landmark Duomo make of the Savoy the ideal base from which to visit the key attractions of this beautiful and historic city. |
The Savoy was built in 1893 as part of the redevelopment of the old Mercato Vecchio, which was later renamed the Piazza della Repubblica. The Mercato Vecchio was the first and most eminent piazza in the city; it was the focal point for all social events and trading activity leading into the city, primarily because it was situated at the intersection of two main roads.
The street traders took advantage of this and clustered around the area to sell their wares. This led to a gradual degeneration of the environment which forced a complete redevelopment into broader streets and a large new piazza towards the end of the 19th century. It once again became a focal meeting point which continues to this day. |
The site on which the hotel is built previously housed the historic church of San Tommaso. When the church was destroyed, architect Giuseppe Baccini was retained to design and build a simple palace to be used as the office for Israeli banker Levi's estate. The building was much admired and was subsequently acquired by the Chiari family, who named it the Savoia and used it to entertain their aristocratic friends. |
Florence is a spectacular and historic city, interspersed with many famous art galleries and churches, each of which has a story to tell. The hotel is located in the very heart of Florence and is therefore the perfect base for visiting the main attractions of the city, such as the Duomo and the Uffizi gallery.
The area around the hotel is mainly pedestrianised and it is fun to explore the cobbled streets on foot and savour the sights and sounds of the city. The chiming of the Campanile bells and the buzz of the scooters creates an irreplaceable and authentic Italian atmosphere. |
