BADIA A PASSIGNANO
The Badia was founded in 1049 by a follower of the Vallombrosian
Monastic Reform movement, it was expanded in the mid-1400s, with
the addition of cloisters and walls, and is now a rectangular fortified
structure with towers at the corners. Badia a Passignano is located
on an isolated hilltop and can be reached by turning off from what
was known in the Middle Ages as the Strada Senese del Sambuco, and
was the main highway between Florence and Siena.
