We could not recommend this hotel highly enough. The rooms are beautiful. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The location is ideal, and the views from the tower are wonderful. We will absolutely stay at this special hotel again on our next visit.

Very authentic Italian hotel.

Our room's bathroom smelled like sewer gas. I am a builder and know that this is caused by how the plumbing was done, and the weather was moderate enough during our stay that I cured the problem by opening the window. Other than that issue, I have no complaints about our stay at all, in fact we loved this hotel. ... We had to leave very early in the morning to meet our air flight and I thought the front desk was staffed 24 hours per day. It was not, but they had asked me the night before when I would be checking out and they were at the desk at that time. This is why I checked 'no' to #11 but it was a very minor misunderstanding. ... As of March 2004 there is remodeling work being done on the building next door. Workers arrive quite early and we were wakened by their noise because our windows were open. If the windows are closed during air conditioning season, this shouldn't be an issue at all. ... The hotel is centrally located but by being two blocks off the main tourist street it is surprisingly quiet most of the time. The rooftop terrace is as wonderful as advertised. The ancient stairs leading up to it rate a two-Chianti-glass maximum! A good place to stay, very nice people, most of whom speak quite good English.

Rooms were nice, nothing too fancy but very acceptable. Service was prompt. The hotel had a feel of a bed and breakfast except without any intrusion of the staff into our affairs. ... Great central location, staying at the hotel and walking to the must-see sites, takes you through the best of Florence. ... Charming and private.

Some posted comments suggested the hotel was difficult to locate, be we had no difficulty finding it. The few times we took a taxi, all the drivers knew the location. ... The room was very quiet compared to its location in Florence. You are literally only a stones throw from the Pontevecchio. The view and ambience from the tower cannot be overstated. My wife and I had a terrific evening enjoying a great glass of Chianti, along with savoring the gorgeous sunset. ... Everyone we encountered from arrival to checkout was very gracious, and went out of their way to make us feel at home. This is truly one of those rare occasions where the experience exceeded our expectations ... This hotel affords an excellent location, close to the Pontevecchio, Pitti Palace, Uffizi, Piazza Signoria, and Mercato Centrale. The accomodations are spacious by Italian standards, and the tower is absolutely the best place to relax and unwind after a long day of waling. The coffee and capucino at breakfast were excellant, a great way to start the day. This hotel offered the best overall experience for us during our visit to Italy, which comprised Rome, Pisa, Venice and Milan. Highly recommended, would definitely stay here again if I return to Florence.

elevator broken. lots of steps! ... The property wasn't exactly BETTER than on web site...just different, and we loved it. We'd stay again as long as the elevator is working. thanks ... The poor staff was nice enough to carry our luggage up and down the stairs. ... You might want to say that it has a sort of 'haunted' enchanting feeling...and that it's a real adventure! ... Fabulous, convenient, fun, night noise from street alittle loud but to be expected....

Staff was pleasant, informed, and prompt, with excellent English. ... The room was larger and quieter than I had expected from previous stays in Italian cities. ... One person recommended a very good restaurant which we enjoyed at reasonable cost, and the night manager arranged a taxi for us at the ungodly hour of 5:00 a.m. These are wonderful hoteliers. ... The tower is extraordinary; unfortunately, we had bad weather and therefore a poor view and no service in the tower. The hotel is also very quiet and spacious, with a lovely lounge. It is a good value. ... The Torre Guelfa is a friendly, accessible, clean hotel with spacious rooms and a well informed, English-speaking staff. Its location is excellent, quiet and close to main attractions, and its tower is extraordinay. It is a good value for a short stay. We did not try the breakfast.

The Hotel itself also had a lot of character. It provided for a memorable experience. The tower was great! ... This is a smaller hotel in a great location with a lot of character. The Staff was wonderful from the Front Desk where they were very comfortable with English to the attentive service at Breakfast. ... Location, location, location. Steps from the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and easy walking to all the main attractions of Florence. The Garage charged EU 30. per night for parking compared to EU 12. per night for our stay in Rome. The excellent central location probably was the reason. ... Directions should be provided for the walk from the garage to the hotel. Also, the entry is not your typical hotel entrance, with a ground floor, clearly marked reception area. It is not clear how to get into the building (use the buzzer by the door and someone will let you in) and once inside, how to get to the reception (located on the 3rd floor) ... The rooftop bar with tables and a spectacular view made the early evening magical....
Breakfast was very marginal. The quality of the rolls and croissants was terrible, like prepackaged stuff....Asian breakfast servers were really surly.

i wasn't sure that i needed to take the lift up to the 3rd floor for the hotel. that would have been helpful to know in advance. ... i have come to learn that when you book a single room you almost always get the smallest, darkest, worst room in the hotel. i wish that weren't true. while my room at the torre guelfa was adequate, i would bet that had i booked a double, my room would have been nicer. (my room was very dark, and i asked if there was another and told no.) ... good location, and the outdoor terrace was what i was looking for.

We truly did like it and would definately recommend it to others. ... the euro was stronger than the dollar at the time so therefore the price was more than we thought, but definately worth it. Being an elderly priest, the first room arranged was unsuitable as it could only be reached by some intimidating stairs but Torre Guelfa then gave us a splendid room which abutted onto a landing right near their new and efficient lift. There was nothing wrong with the original room, only reaching it was difficult. ... It was our second stay and we enjoyed its amenities, its position and its style. The lounge is excellent and spacious and the staff a delight and always helpful, and honest about everything. We have recommened it to many friends who agree with our assessment. ... There were no problems and full assistance about a taxi and getting to the station. We will come again I expect. ... The street can be noisy, a Florentine situation, and perhaps some rooms could benefit from double-glazing. Medieval streets, being so full of stone surfaces inevitably echo. But we accept it as part of the Florence experience. Others may noty be so tolerant, especially on a first visit. ... As a very secure place to stay, with excellent bathroom facilities and an adequate continental breakfast. Unfortunately, during our visit the elevator was not working. It had been out of order since Feb. We would have appreciated being apprised of this problem, as we were traveling with 4 woman all over 75 yrs of age. Everything about our stay at the Torre Guelfa was great except for one problem - noise at 5 am! The hotel inadvertently misplaced our reservation. However, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us. We did have to shift rooms twice during our four day stay, but staff moved all of our things for us, and each room was spacious and pleasant. I can assure you that this minor inconvenience did not detract from our pleasant stay in any way. ... Breakfast was really good; kept us going until time for mid-afternoon gelato. Hotel location is excellent for exploring Florence. Neighborhood is surprisingly noisy.
Be sure you know exactly where the hotel is if you plan to return late in the evening, as there is no sign, and the address numbers are in no order that I can discern. (We actually thought this added to the charm!) ... All of the above, plus:

The elevator was being replaced, so they had someone (very pleasant) carry our bags up to the Lobby (equiv. to 4th Flr). Because of the inconvenience of having to take the stairs during our stay, they gave us a 20% discount off of our bill. We loved Torre Guelfa: our room, the tower, the staff, so we felt it was a good deal. ... Regarding Quality of the rooms: the room was clean, spacious and private, but definitely not the quietest. The NOISE from the street below was very loud at times. It kept my husband up half the night, one night; plus off and on the other nights. Our daughter slept through it all. I am a pretty sound sleeper, but it even disturbed my sleep a few times. ... With the discount, we considered it a very good value because of the LOCATION, views, staff, and our room. The stairs could have been an issue for some, but we didn't mind much. And fortunately, it's a temporary situation. I would like to go back, with the brand new elevator. ... The street noise--Negative. The unanticipated, breathtaking views from the tower--Positive!!!!!!!!! ... As listed above

We would advise Torre Guelfa to improve its breakfasts! A little fresh fruit and cereal (as at the other two hotels we visited) would make a big difference to guests staying as many nights as we did. However, our room was huge, even for the three of us. So ususual for a city hotel.

Overall, they were just lovely and accomodating. ... It had an excellent location, close to everything, but our room was not the best in the hotel (we knew this before we booked - it was the last room available and the first floor rooms are not quite as nice as the upper floor rooms). The sign at the entrance is not well lit for a dark, rainy night such as it was on our arrival. We were very hesitant and confused. But once we arrived on the 4th floor, the gentleman there was very nice. ... Would it be possible to add a shelf in the bathroom of #15 for toiletries, etc.? One of our rooms had an unpleasant sewer smell coming from the toilet now and then, which would fill the room. Fortunately it was warm enough to open the windows to air it out. We did not bother to bring this to the hotel's attention because we figured there was nothing they could do about it and it wasn't all the time. We spent most of our time out sightseeing anyway and were in the room only to sleep. ... The Hotel Torre Guelfa oozes old world charm. We stayed on the first floor because it was less expensive; the actual hotel is on the third floor and there is a small elevator. I imagine the third floor rooms are nicer, but ours were fine. Our two rooms were a nice size (one with twin beds and one with a double) and were in a very private corner of the building. There was a some noise from the street below at night - people, cars - but we were so tired from all our walking and sightseeing that it didn't keep us awake. Our rooms were very clean and adequate, but simple. The beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms were clean and typically small, but we expected that. The folks at the desk were very nice and helpful and spoke perfect English. Breakfast was in a cute little room and was typically European- cappucino, juices, yogurt, croissants and other carbs. The staff was very nice. The very best thing about this hotel is the tower - the views are truly incredible! You can get a drink from the small bar up there and watch the sunset. It was rainy two of the nights, so we shared a bottle of wine with our friends in the hotel's living room, which was lovely. The location is perfect - so close to Ponte Vecchio, Il Duomo, etc. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again if I am ever lucky enough to return to Florence.

A bit confusing because the reception is on the 3rd floor and not directly accessible from the street unless you ring the buzzer which is small and not well marked. It looks like a private residence bell. Then, once you figure out the bell and the door (about 25 yards away from the buzzer), you must take the lift to the 3rd floor. the Lift does not work unless ALL 3 doors are closed exactly perfectly. It seems a reception could be established right at the entrance--or at least better instructions. We helped one couple late at night trying to use their room key to open the private gate which only opens with the buzzer which was never explained to them. ... The location is absolutely wonderful--in walking distance to everything of importance. The tower in the evenings is absolutely the best feature and was enjoyed by everyone. Great, awesome views every nite. Breakfasts are blah--the same day after day. Can't they change the rolls once in awhile? Pretty bland compared to breakfast plans of France or Germany or other. I would opt out of breakfast plan next time. ... Fast, easy. Cab took a while to get there. Not far from the train station. ... LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION--it could not be better. Steps from the Ponte Vecchio! And the old tower with drinks every nite is the highest private tower in florence--great, wonderful views. ... I would definitely recommend, but tell them to opt out of the breakfast--just to blah! Go around the corner to the main street and just get a pastry from a little local espresso shop. Location is wonderful.

The hotel staff was very nice. The only thing that could have been better was the size of the bathroom. Great view from the tower. The breakfast was nothing exciting.

We were not sure of the correct side of town to find our exit. Coming from Florence, the autostrada sign says 'Florence' or 'Rome'. We got off at that point and had an hour long traffic jam to navigate. The parking attendant at the garage was helpful, and the desk person was very welcoming. ... Rooms were excellent, beds comfortable, AC was adequate. Times spent at the top of the tower by day and by night were my favorite Florence experiences. ... A little pricey, but taking into account the excellent location, it was acceptable. I would stay there again. We found the breakfast room a little too warm...could you open the windows for a little ventilation? ... Please include that the parking must be paid in cash. We were hoping to use a credit card, and had to find an ATM after checking out of the garage. ... Charming 13th century tower with memorable views, very comfortable rooms, helpful staff, and a welcome elevator for check-in and check-out. Hidden entrance belies its excellent location.

it's a rought climb up to room 15 but worth the effort. ... very helpful and friendly staff when arranging reservations, making suggestions, etc. Room 15, with rooftop terrace, was marvelous and is the only place to stay at this hotel. Breakfast was major disappointment, with this hotel being the only one during three weeks in Italy which did not provide a cooked breakfast. It offered the identical menu of rolls, croissants, juice, coffee, yogurt every day.(not a good way to start our 9 days in Florence) ... no cooked breakfast. rooms, other than 15, have no view. unusual entrance. pushing a button to open iron gate. then taking elevator three floors to lobby. very convenient location. minutes to all attractions ... charming with great view and marvelous ambience as long as you are in room 15. limited breakfast is a najor negative and inexcusable given the cost.

The Torre Guelfa was clean, pleasant and friendly. My only disappointment was that my room had no view whatsoever. The tower is as good as advertised and is the perfect place to relax and gaze over the city after dinner.

As Florence is very congested, directions should be clear - there were many street closings and one way streets that were not stated anywhere, making getting there a chore. My advice would be to take a cab and hope they know where they are going, as even that didn't help to get exact directions. ... The hotel provided large, spacious rooms, however, the surrounding streets were a bit busy throughout the night, and since the rooms are large with high ceilings, the noise was amplified. ... Great location (blocks away from Ponte Vecchio and much shopping/sight-seeing/dining), charming and quaint hotel, staff extremly helpful, a bit noisy at night, confusing area to drive through....TAKE A CAB!!!!

Unfortunately, we were told that the rooms were quiet and our daughter's room was 'on the street side' so that workers made a lot of noise in the morning, and party makers made noise at night. ... The staff did try to accomodate us. For example, they courteously cashed our Euro traveler's checks at FACE VALUE without gouging us for a commission. That was appreciated.
... The location is amazing, on a wonderful quiet tiny street right near the Ponte Vecchio. The tower view is amazing and the breakfast room soothing.

no problem,I know the area ... In general, this is a nice, friendly hotel and a good staff. I liked the informality. The rooms were somewhat dark, there was no shelf or stool in the bathroom to lay out toilet articles. A fair amount of street noise. Slightly overpriced. ... Friendly, informal, nice tower, a bit dark, a bit overpriced.

Parking details for our car could have been clearer. ... Breakfast totally lacked inspiration & quality & was not as good as the cheaper places that we subsequently stayed at during our time in Tuscanny. ... We were asked to leave at 11:00, however, it stated 12:00 departure on the email we received. ... Really lovely building. Great view from a fantastic tower.

It was not made clear that there was a 'hotel' and a 'bed and breakfast' at Hotel Torre Guelfa. In the response, it said that they would have us in one room one night and move us to another on the second night. It was not made clear that the first night would be in the 'bed and breakfast' room which was very disappointing compared to the textual and photographic image we were given from your web site. The second night when we were moved to a 'hotel' room, we got what we had expected. ... No need ... No need ... We were told that we would stay in one room on Friday night and move to a different room on Saturday night. That was clear. What was never stated is that Friday night we would be given a room in the 'bed and breakfast' accommodations which was worse than we expected and envisioned. There was no indication that there was a possibility for rooms other than the 'hotel' rooms, which we stayed in Saturday night. Saturday night lived up to our expectations. ... Item 23: Friday night - Poor as based on our expectations. Saturday night - Very good
Item 25: Friday night - worse than expected Saturday night - exactly what we expected
Item 26: Other than the 'bed and breakfast' rooms, everything was as expected from the website. ... Carlo was very helpful the whole weekend. He arranged for a taxi to take us to the airport. He even checked us out on Saturday night since we were leaving very early on Sunday morning. He recommended a great restaurant for us on Saturday night, too. ... Make sure that if the management is going to book a room for a guest in the 'bed and breakfast' that they state that case to the guest and tell the guest the rooms are not as nice as portrayed on the website. ... It was very helpful, easy to use and quick. ... The 'hotel' part was very nice. It was worth the money. We will stay there again if we are assured a room in the hotel and not the 'bed and breakfast'

Our first room, #14, was large, but the bathroom had a bad smell. I believe it was coming from the drain in the shower. The next day we asked for a room change. It was granted. The room was smaller, but we had no problems with any other room issues. ... Our party was disappointed in the breakfasts, which were less than we expected. We had recently come from Rome, at a similarly priced hotel, and the breakfasts there were much better. ... We believe the cost of the hotel was high compared to what we received. This was based on our experience in our previous Italy based hotels. ... The hotel is a small and quaint hotel in the center of Florence. It is well located for walking the central part of the city. The hotel is an old property, and there are few amenities included. For example, we were charged for tea in the evening, which had been part of service at our other hotels in Italy. The breakfast leaves much to be desired. For the price, it is only a fair deal.

For three people we had a king and then in a side room was a twin. The side room was right over the narrow street where at 5:30 AM all the carts for the market are moved along with the men doing the work. NO sleep possible after that starts. Two days we had a terrible sewage smell which started in our bathroom and spread throughout. I told the front desk but it happened again. ... You are unable to take any food or beverage to the top of the tower other than that provided by hotel. I saw no way to get food from the hotel. The top of the tower would be the most magnificent if you were to pick up food at the market right next door and enjoy a lunch with the great view. There are only three room on the inner courtyard. All the rest are to the streets. ... Disinterested staff, poor breakffast, great location

We arrived early (before noon) yet were still allowed into our room, which was very nice. ... The hotel is listed as 'air conditioned.' There was one wall AC unit in our room and it did a reasonable (but not great) job of cooling the room. It was extraordinarily hot in Florence (over 100 degrees F), which no doubt made it harder to cool the rooms, but many Americans would have been dissatisfied that the room temperature was as warm as it was. Also, none of the common areas (except breakfast room) are air conditioned.
Evening drinks on the top of the tower were a highlight of our Florence stay.

Originally we had a room on the 1st floor, which felt like 2nd class rooms and were very cold. the decor of the 1st floor lobby was tacky. Also, since the 1st floor lobby wasn't locked, I did not feel very safe. Fortunately they let us change rooms up to the main floor for the same price which was warm and wonderful. The staff was very helpful throughout our stay. ... I think they should be more forthcoming about the huge difference between the 1st and main floors. ... After we changed room, I would describe the place as warm, charming, and very well located.

One negative about the room was the fact that we were badly eaten up by mosquitos while sleeping!! No screens on the windows!
Also, although the bathtub was lovely, most American travelers take showers.. The hand held shower head is NOT my idea of a shower.... That could easily be fixed in a bathroom of that large size. When they advertised a shower, because I asked ahead of time I expected one that was attached to the wall and enclosed. All the other places we stayed in had that feature. An important convenience to American travelers.
Breakfast should be labeled by the hotel as Continental, not breakfast... Bread and coffee is not breakfast to Americans... Something hot is always offered on a breakfast that we would look for again. In the summer fresh fruit needs to be available!!! ... Great location for getting around. ... A very charming piazza, spacious and warm.. Full of old world atmosphere.

Our room had no hot water for the first day of our two-day stay. We were offered an apology, but no other room in the hotel was available and our rate was not discounted for this major inconvenience/problem. ... This was the most expensive hotel of our stay, and not at all comparable to, say, the Pensione Accademia in Venice, which was 170 Euro per night. The hotel is warmly furnished and charming, but the experience did not make me yearn to return -- which, in my judgment, should be the case with a great hotel. ... While the property in general was accurately reflected on the website, our room seemed a little more worn. Additionally, we were disappointed that the bar on the belltower was never open while we were there. Even though it was off season, we thought it would have been reasonable to serve drinks in the living room if the hotel thought it too cool to open the bar upstairs. ... The best thing about this hotel that made the cost acceptable was its location!
